West Africa 2027

Senegal and The Gambia River

Venture to West Africa, a seldomvisited region of spectacular wildlife, steeped in spiritual traditions and centuries of history.

Senegal blends French colonial heritage with peaceful Muslim culture, vibrant fishing villages, and stunning birdlife.

Once central to the slave trade, today it captivates with beautiful mosques, colourful handicrafts, and rich musical traditions.

The Gambia, encircled by Senegal along The Gambia River, showcases British colonial influences and resort-lined beaches.

Our seven-night river cruise aboard a 25-cabin motor yacht reveals an extraordinary array of birdlife and riverside communities.

  • The Gambian local currency is the Delasi (D), which fluctuates in value strongly. It’s best to have hard currency on hand if need be – British pounds, Euros or USD. ATMs exist in coastal areas but are not practical.

Countries:

  • Senegal: is virtually one of the most stable country of the African continent. It has never suffered a coup and is closely allied to France. This will be our second tour to this country. We have extended the time here and added a river cruise up the Gambia River.
  • Gambia: officially the Republic of The Gambia, is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal with the exception of its western coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It is the smallest country within mainland Africa. The peculiar shape and size of the country are the result of territorial compromises made during the 19th century by Great Britain, which controlled the lower Gambia River,
and France, which ruled the neighbouring colony of Senegal.
