rivers and coastal plains. Experience the scenic south in style travelling by exclusive charter train.
We travel by rail from Auckland to Wellington* then also from Blenheim, along the Kaikoura coastline
to Christchurch. We take the time to explore the City of Christchurch and the Akaroa Peninsula before
we travel on the TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch to Greymouth and return. We continue by train
South to Dunedin and Invercargill with surprises along the way. The tour continues by luxury coach to
Te Anau and Queenstown with an included luncheon cruise on Milford Sound.

Auckland – Wellington

oard the popular ‘Northern Explorer’ train at The Strand in Parnell, Auckland or at any other designated stations on the main trunk line (Northern Explorer Train seat numbers restricted)*. Among today’s highlights are the circular climb up the famous engineering feat – the Raurimu Spiral to the Central Plateau and Tongariro National Park with spectacular views of Mt Ruapehu. Continue on to Ohakune, Waiouru and alongside the Rangitikei River to Wellington for a one night stay. Enjoy a welcome dinner at our centrally located hotel. (Note if you prefer a one way flight Auckland to Wellington is available to start the tour. Other home destinations please ask)


Friday 18 March

Wellington – Picton - Christchurch

After breakfast we cross the Cook Strait by ferry to Picton. We join the Coastal Pacific Train for a leisurely journey to Christchurch. This special section of picturesque coastline railway line has recently opened following the 2016 earthquake and the opportunity to see the progress as you pass through Kaikoura, will create a lot of interest. Continue inland through the hill country of North Canterbury to Christchurch, arriving at our inner city hotel in the evening for a four night stay.


Saturday 19 March

Depart by coach for a tour of the Banks Peninsula. The drive has spectacular views overlooking bays and beaches before arriving in Akaroa with time to enjoy the history, harbour and French character. We return to Christchurch and the afternoon is free for you to enjoy the city.

Coastal Pacific and Tranz Alpine train journeys These two world-renowned train routes travel through some of the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand. Rocky coastlines, picturesque sea views, agricultural farmland, the rugged Southern Alps and historical towns all make the journey a wonderful experience.

Christchurch – Greymouth – Christchurch

Today board the Tranz Alpine train to traverse the spectacular Southern Alps to the West Coast. Cross the Canterbury Plains through Darfield and climb the mountain range including a stop at Arthurs Pass. Our descent takes us through Otira and the renowned rain forests and wetlands to Greymouth.   After a short break to explore this West Coast town rejoin the train for your return journey to Christchurch.


Tuesday 22 March

Christchurch – Dunedin

We join our exclusive chartered train and travel south through rolling farmland and coastal inlets via Oamaru to arrive in Dunedin for a one night stay.

Rejoin our train and travel to Balclutha where we will join our coach and have a short visit into the Caitlin’s to Nugget Point lighthouse before continuing onto Invercargill for a two night stay.

This morning we will have an excursion to Bluff before a free afternoon to explore the city.  Why not discover the world class vintage truck collection at Bill Richardson Transport World or learn about the legend of speed - Burt Munro at E Hayes Motor works. Invercargill - Te Anau

After breakfast we drive along the scenic southern route and rich Southland countryside to Te Anau for a two night stay. An afternoon optional tour is available to the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves.

Milford Sound Cruise

Drive through mountain beech forests framed by spectacular snow-capped mountains and the Homer Tunnel before emerging at Milford Sound for your lunch time cruise.

Te Anau - Queenstown

After breakfast we take the back roads route via MT Nicholas Cottage and Bullock Creek to the Walter Peak Station for a Gourmet BBQ lunch. We then cruise across the lake onboard the TSS Earnslaw to Queenstown for a two night stay.

Today is at leisure to enjoy ‘The Jewel of the South’. Maybe take the gondola to admire the panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu or for the more adventurous a helicopter ride above Lake Wakatipu. The choices are extensive. A farewell dinner is included tonight.

  • At times, entering and exiting the train can be very demanding for those with limited mobility
    •To ensure the tour is enjoyable for the whole group, a good standard of fitness is required with the ability to walk 400 metres unaided

Described by the Sydney Morning Herald as “one of the most unusual limestone cave experiences on the planet’, the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves is a must-do for anyone visiting Fiordland.

Monday 28 March Queenstown Helicopter Flight $280 per person
Look down on spectacular scenery as you cross Lake Wakatipu with a special landing during the flight. Continue over Ben Lomond and the famous historic Skippers Canyon. See the renowned steep canyon walls of the Shotover River and fly past Coronet Peak and the Wakatipu Basin.
