Begin your journey at historic Tiananmen Square, then enter the Forbidden City, the imperial seat for centuries. Visit the Temple of Heaven, a sacred site of royal worship. Explore a local marriage market—a unique insight into modern matchmaking customs—and browse the lively pearl market.
Venture out to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, including a round-trip cable car ride. Visit a jade factory, then spend the afternoon wandering through the landscaped grounds of the Summer Palace, once the imperial summer retreat. Return to your hotel with dinner at a local restaurant.
Start the day with a rickshaw ride through Beijing’s ancient hutongs then, board a high-speed train to Xi’an, the ancient capital.
Today visit the extraordinary Terracotta Warrior Museum, home to thousands of life-sized soldiers built to guard the tomb of China’s first emperor. Learn about their construction at a local workshop. After lunch, walk along the imposing Xi’an City Wall, one of China’s oldest and most intact fortifications.
Fly from Xi’an to Nyingchi in eastern Tibet. Explore Lama Lin Monastery, nestled beside the Niyang River and the Peach Blossom Village, framed by snow-capped mountains.
Embark on a breathtaking drive to Lhasa, pausing to admire Draksumtso Lake, one of Tibet’s most beautiful alpine lakes. Arrive in Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet, and settle into your hotel for a three-night stay.
Today’s sightseeing includes Jokhang Temple, the most sacred in Tibet, and Sera Monastery, where you may witness monks energetically debating Buddhist philosophy in the open courtyards.
Visit the iconic Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama and a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism. In the afternoon, explore the Norbulingka, a Plateau Botanic Garden, with over 100 rare species of plants from the Himalaya.
Depart Lhasa and drive to Tsedang, stopping at Samye Monastery, Tibet’s first and one of its most architecturally unique monasteries and said to be the birth place of Tibetan culture. Continue to Tsedang, considered the cradle of Tibetan civilization.
Today explore Yumbulakang Palace, Tibet’s first royal residence, perched dramatically on a hilltop. Then visit Tradruk Temple, home to the exquisite Pearl Thangka, a sacred artwork sewn with over 29,000 pearls.
We depart Tibet and fly to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province. Spend a relaxed afternoon in the People’s Park observing local life before dinner at a local restaurant.
After breakfast we visit the Wolong Panda Reserve, home to China’s beloved giant pandas and a reserve dedicated to the protection of forest ecosystems and precious wildlife. In the afternoon, return to Chengdu and wander the charming Wide and Narrow Alleys, filled with tea houses, crafts and historic architecture.
Take the high-speed train to Chongqing and visit the Three Gorges Museum and ancient Ciqikou town. Board your river cruise ship for a leisurely three-night cruise on the Yangtze River.
Sail past picturesque villages and visit either Ghost City Fengdu or Mount Shuanggui Scenic Area. Participate in a Tai Chi session or enjoy an onboard lecture to learn about the river’s legends.
Pass through the Three Gorges. Firstly the majestic Qutang and Wu Gorges, with an excursion to Shennv Stream and possibly White Emperor City. Marvel at the narrow cliffs and dramatic landscapes of the Xiling Gorge as the cruise continues toward the Three Gorges Dam.
Disembark after a visit to the massive Three Gorges Dam. Fly to Hangzhou, famous for its scenic beauty, and check in for an overnight stay.
Enjoy a serene boat ride on West Lake, visit the ancient Lingyin Temple, and learn about tea-making at a local tea farm. After lunch, drive to vibrant Shanghai for a two-night stay.
