EVERYONE LOVES ADVENTURE AND WE HAVE FOUND A LITTLE GEM TRAVELLING VIA A BACKROAD FROM QUEENSTOWN TO TE ANAU.
The adventure day starts in Queenstown with a cruise on the Earnslaw to Walter Peak Station. After a sumptuous lunch we board 4 WD vehicles to travel the backroad via Mt Nicholas, past Lake Movara and Bullock Creek to arrive in Te Anau late afternoon.
Our very comfortable charter train journey travels on lines now closed to general passenger services. Starting at Invercargill you will travel through to Christchurch with sightseeing stays in both Dunedin and Oamaru.
Depart Auckland on a early afternoon Air New Zealand flight. On arrival you will transfer to your hotel. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner.
Today is at leisure to enjoy ‘The Jewel of the South’. Maybe take the gondola to admire the panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu or for the more adventurous a helicopter ride above Lake Wakatipu. The choices are extensive. Dinner tonight is included.
Optional Helicopter Ride $360 per person - Fly past the canyons of the Shotover River, the ski slopes of Coronet Peak, and rural retreats and villages that Queenstowners call home. Experience an alpine landing on a craggy mountain precipice as you take in the striking views.
A late morning departure and join the TSS Eanslaw and cruise to Walter Peak Station where a Gourmet BBQ lunch is served. During the stay there will be a rural demonstration plus time to visit their gardens. On the backroad journey there will be photostops. Two breaks enroute at Old Mt Nicholas Cottage and Bullock Creek.
Drive through mountain beech forests framed by spectacular snow-capped mountains and the Homer Tunnel before emerging at Milford Sound for your lunch time cruise.
After a leisurely breakfast we travel along the scenic southern route and rich Southland countryside to Invercargill. A relaxing afternoon before dinner in our centrally located hotel. Why not discover the world class vintage truck collection at Bill Richardson Transport World, or learn about the legend of speed - Burt Munro at E Hayes Motorworks or visit the classic motorcycle meca. Or simply take a stroll through the Botanical Gardens.
Join our private charter train and travel to Balclutha where we will join our coach and have a visit into the Caitlin’s to Nugget Point lighthouse before continuing onto Dunedin for a two night stay.
This morning enjoy a sightseeing tour of the ‘Edinburgh of the South’ including Signal Hill, the world’s steepest street, Botanical Gardens, University and the Forsyth Barr sports stadium. The afternoon is free.
Optional Tour Royal Albatross Centre $55 per person
Albatross are the world’s largest seabirds. They normally breed on remote islands and spend at least 85 percent of their lives at sea, well away from land and human view. Dunedin’s Taiaroa Head is the only mainland Royal Albatross breeding colony in the world and is a great day out from Dunedin (group numbers are limited).
After breakfast rejoin our private train and continue to North Otago’s major city - Oamaru. This afternoon there is a local guided walking tour of Oamaru with its Victorian Precinct built of Oamaru stone. Steampunk has grown rapidly over the past 10 years to make Oamaru the “capital of Steampunk” in the world.
Optional Tour Blue Penguin Colony visit (Oamaru) $38per person
The birds return from their days fishing, make their way across the beach, up a stony ramp and cross to the colony. The colony began when a small number of blue penguins began nesting in a rock quarry area at the edge of Oamaru Harbour in the early 1990s. Today it is Oamaru’s largest tourist attraction.
After breakfast continue north along the coastal rail route through Timaru and the plains via Ashburton to Christchurch, where we farewell our charter train. Dinner tonight in the hotel.
A walking tour of the central city is included this morning, afternoon free. Enjoy a farewell Dinner tonight to end our wonderful southern rail experience.
Optional Tour Tranz Alpine $399 per person
Board the Tranz Alpine train to traverse the spectacular Southern Alps to the West Coast. Cross the Canterbury Plains through Darfield and climb the mountain range including a stop at Arthurs Pass.
