This is a one-off, two nation cruise in a specially designed ship that transits the Erie Canal and cruises through the Thousand Islands along the St Lawrence Seaway, part of the International boundary between the US and Canada.
The seaway is a system of locks, canals, and channels dotted with waterfront communities, scenic islands, and wildlife habitats. We travel from the glitz of the Manhattan skyline to the cobblestone streets and vintage charm of Quebec (considered by many to be the most romantic city in North America). In between, the romantic contrast of the city scenes and surging rivers, makes this journey one to remember. The tour begins in the Texas city of Houston, home of the NASA Centre, before flying to glamorous New York to join the cruise. Post-cruise, we conclude this fascinating journey in vibrant Montreal and spend two nights in the capital city of Ottawa, before departing for home or extending your holiday. “There is no more relaxing way to see a variety of stages of colour, than by small ship along this region’s waterways, including the historic Erie Canal.”
Depart late afternoon on Air New Zealand, cross the International Date Line to arrive in Houston (Texas) mid-afternoon. Transfer to a central hotel for a three-night stay.
After breakfast depart on a Houston city tour which includes the Museum District, downtown, NRG Stadium and Memorial Park which stretches along the water trail system. Afternoon free to explore on your own before meeting at a local restaurant for our Welcome Dinner
Today travel out of the city to the Johnson Space Centre for an informative tour including the Enterprise Orbiter. Return to hotel early afternoon to relax or further explore the city
After a leisurely morning we fly to New York City and transfer to your hotel which is close to Times Square. This evening, enjoy a dinner cruise of the harbour and see the wonderful skyline lit up at night.
Today’s tour of New York City includes the 9/11 Memorial, Empire State Building, Central Park, 5th Avenue and some of the iconic neighbourhoods. Return to the hotel mid-afternoon. Tonight there will be time to take in a show at Broadway.
Sunday morning early is a great time to walk as the shops open at 10am. Locals use this time to walk, ride or rollerblade in Central Park. Early afternoon, transfer to “Grande Caribe’- your home for the next 13 nights. Tonight meet the crew and enjoy your first dinner on board.
The day begins with a morning sail through New York Harbour passing the Statue of Liberty before cruising the majestic natural beauty of the Hudson River Valley. An afternoon optional tour takes you to the campus of the prestigious West Point Military Academy with its awe-inspiring Gothic Revival style chapel, subject to availability. Continue to Kingston in the afternoon.
This afternoon in Kingston, tour Hyde Park which includes a visit to “Springwood,” the beloved estate home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt - now his presidential library and museum. Later, travel up the northern leg of the Hudson River to Troy. The retractable pilot-house will be lowered to transit the famed Erie Canal. This evening enjoy lively onboard musical entertainment
Our special ship design allows us to transit and enjoy a full day of cruising the historic Erie Canal, widely considered to be one of the most important works of civil engineering in America. A local historian joins the cruise to narrate about the history of the Canal.
A day to behold the beauty of the Catskill Mountains where approximately 250,000 acres of the Catskill’s pristine landscape has been designated “forever wild” - thanks to the work of environmental visionaries. Cooperstown, located in the foothills of the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Tonight arrive in Sylvan Beach on the shores of shimmering Lake Oneida.
Cruise the canal to Oswego, located on the shores of Lake Ontario. Either take a shuttle on a loop around this charming area to view some of the highlights like the H. Lee White Marine Museum, the Richardson-Bates House Museum, or visit Fort Ontario. Watch the retractable pilot-house on board being raised back to its full height. Local musician’s entertainment tonight.
Today, cruise to Clayton, NY around the gorgeous Thousand Islands region. Visit the notable Antique Boat Museum for a glimpse of the world’s largest showcase of classic recreational boats. Spend the night in beautiful Alexandria Bay, NY with views of the famed Boldt Castle.
Continue cruising through the stunning Thousand Islands along the St. Lawrence River, part of the international boundary between the US and Canada. Visit tiny Dark Island in Chippewa Bay and tour the stately and elegant Singer Castle, built as a private home in 1905, the mansion was used for rum-running during Prohibition. Continue on to Ogdensburg, NY where you may opt to visit the Frederic Remington Art Museum.
Cross into Canada and cruise the St. Lawrence Seaway, the gateway from the Atlantic Ocean to the North American Great Lakes. The seaway is a system of locks, canals, and channels dotted with waterfront communities, scenic islands, and wonderful wildlife habitats.
After a full day of cruising, arrive in Quebec City.
Quebec City, with its distinctly French culture, is considered by many to be the most romantic city in North America. We visit the Chateau de Frontenac and browse the shops and restaurants along the cobblestone streets of Old Town. This morning introduces the charms of Quebec City and the stunning view from Observation Towers, before visiting Montmorency Falls.
Today’s port is charming Three Rivers, also known as Trois-Rivières in French. This morning select from two optional tours: “Churches of TroisRivières” to admire the stunning architecture, or a Heritage Walking Tour. This evening, enjoy a special opportunity to visit the Musèe des Ursulines, a short walk from the ship and listen to a private organ recital inside the museum’s impressive chapel. Later this evening (10pm) depart for Montreal.
Famed for its impressive cuisines, cobblestone streets, and world-class shopping, You may choose a city tour that includes Old Montreal, Olympic Park, Mount Royal Park, and St. Joseph’s Oratory. This evening enjoy a musical performance of the flute and guitar by local entertainers.
This morning, disembark ‘Grande Caribe’ and travel by coach to Ottawa via the picturesque Laurentian Mountains with rugged forest-clad hills in their Autumn glory. Arrive in Ottawa for a two-night stay.
From its lumber and rail centre past, Ottawa has developed into a modern capital featuring monuments, museums, galleries and parks. Our morning sightseeing tour includes Parliament Hill, the Prime Minister’s residence and Byward market. Rest of day free with a Farewell Dinner in the evening.
After an early breakfast, transfer to airport for a direct flight to Vancouver where a day room at an Airport Hotel is available. Later, an evening departure to New Zealand.

Climate - Temeratues (Sept - Oct)
This time of the year is reasonably dry, but variable. A jacket will be required from New York onwards – chilly mornings and evenings, getting colder the further north we travel.
Walking tours are an important part of the itinerary and a good standard of health is required with the ability to walk on uneven surfaces and negotiate stairs
