This morning, travel by coach to the internationally-recognised Southward Car Museum.

Southward Car Museum; The founder, Sir Len Southward, with his wife Lady Vera Southward began collecting cars in 1956 when they purchased a Model T Ford for 40 pounds. This vehicle was the start of what would become one of the largest privately-owned car collections in the world.  The model T remains in its original condition and has pride of place in the museum - now home to over 500 vehicles and even a few aircraft.  Other interesting vehicles include the first car ever imported to NZ, an 1895 Benz Velo, Marlene Dietrich’s 1934 V-16 Cadillac, a 1915 Stutz Indianapolis race car, the Chicago Gangster, Mickey Cohen’s armour plated limo – complete with bullet holes and a DeLorean made famous by the movie ‘Back To The Future’. Downstairs in the family classics area, be stirred by the classic Triumphs, Humbers, Hillmans and Mark II Zephyrs of New Zealand’s yesteryears.  Even non-petrol heads will find a great deal of interest here – it’s a total nostalgia trip!

Transfer back to the accommodation, mid-afternoon. Rest of the afternoon and evening are free to explore this coastal town.  There are a number of nearby restaurants for you to experience.

General Information

Kapiti Island

5km off the west coast of the lower North Island, Kapiti Island Nature Reserve is isolated, still wild and privy to few.

This safe and protected environment is blessed with an abundance of native and endangered species. Lessons learnt in over 100 years of nature conservation and conscientious management have allowed some of New Zealand’s most treasured and endangered fauna to once again flourish on Kapiti Island.

Highly restricted public access is now possible and the limited opportunities afforded guarantee a very unique encounter with nature for those permitted entry.  See Hihi, Saddlebacks, Weka, Bellbirds, Kokako, Kaka and more.  Natural and unspoiled, you’ll encounter a slice of natural New Zealand to be treasured.

Health and Fitness

• To ensure the tour is enjoyable for the whole group, a good standard of fitness is required and clients must be independently mobile. Climbing on and off the boat and some of the bush walks can be demanding.

• Mobility frames are not practical or permitted
