Your adventure begins as we fly south to Christchurch with Air New Zealand. Enjoy lunch and then a city sights afternoon tour before enjoying a welcome dinner tonight at our central city hotel.
We join our exclusive chartered train and travel south through rolling farmland and coastal inlets via Timaru and Oamaru, to arrive in Dunedin for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, board our train and travel through Gore and Balclutha before arriving in Invercargill after lunch. The rest of the afternoon is free to enjoy one of the southernmost cities in the world.
This morning we travel to Bluff and cross Foveaux Strait by large modern catamaran to Stewart Island. Once on the island you can enjoy an optional leisurely cruise of beautiful Paterson Inlet and Ulva Island or explore the small township of Oban by foot.
Return mid-afternoon to our Invercargill hotel. Dinner is included tonight.

We re-join the train in Balclutha before we continue north to Dunedin.
A free day to enjoy the ‘Edinburgh of the South’. Why not venture out to Signal Hill, the world’s steepest street or the Botanical Gardens. An optional tour to the Royal Albatross Centre on the Otago Peninsular is not be missed.
After breakfast we head north along the coastal rail route through Palmerston, Oamaru Timaru and the plains via Ashburton to return to Christchurch and say farewell to our charter train. Farewell Dinner tonight to end our wonderful southern rail experience.
Transfer to the airport for return flights to Auckland or other destinations.

Fri 30 Nov Ulva Island Explorer $95 per person
With lunch included this cruise will showcase some of Paterson Inlet’s stunning scenery with its hidden coves and un-spoilt beaches. While on board, keep a look out for fur seals and penguins – you will see a lot of them around this area. Paterson inlet is home to renowned wildlife sanctuary Ulva Island and we’ll stop there for a 45 minute guided walk. The island is home to weka (native woodhen), bush robins, rare saddlebacks and yellowheads amongst other species. (Group numbers are limited).
Fri 30 Nov Stewart Island Village and Bays Tour $45 per person
Gain an entertaining insight into New Zealand’s southernmost community, and learn about the history and environment of Stewart Island. Our local guides enjoy sharing their knowledge of the area on this mini-bus tour of the Island. You will have plenty of time to get off the bus for photo stops and short walks. Highlights include a visit to the gateway of Rakiura National Park at Lee Bay, beautiful Horseshoe Bay and Observation Rock with its stunning views of Paterson Inlet.
Sun 2 Dec Royal Albatross Centre (Dunedin) $50 per person
Albatrosses are the world’s largest seabirds. They normally breed on remote islands and spend at least 85 percent of their lives at sea, well away from land and human view. Dunedin’s Taiaroa Head is the only mainland Royal Albatross breeding colony in the world and is a wonderful day out from Dunedin. The tour includes some walking to see the nesting Albatross (numbers are limited).

At times, entering and exiting the train can be very demanding for those with limited mobility.
To ensure the tour is enjoyable for the whole group, a good standard of fitness is required with the ability to comfortably walk 400 metres. Mobility frames are not practical or permitted.
