The Pelorus Mail Boat is one of the last remaining ‘Genuine’ Mail Boats left anywhere in the world and has been delivering mail by water to the residents of the Pelorus Sound since 1918.
For over 100 years The Mail Run – carrying mail, along with groceries, farming supplies and tourists – has cruised the waters of the remote Sounds, creating a lifeline to the outside world for those living in areas without road access.
Whilst delivering, you’ll visit isolated homesteads nestled in quiet secluded bays and view mussel farms to see why Pelorus Sound is the mussel capital of the world.
Old timers row out in dinghies to meet us, while some receive their supplies on tiny, unspoilt beaches.
The day trip includes commentary on the history of the Sounds and its residents.
A chance to see the REAL Sounds
Mid-morning departure on Air New Zealand, on arrival a transfer to a nearby vineyard for a two course lunch with matching wines. Afterwards we check into our central city accommodation. Rest of afternoon free.
Later this morning a transfer to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.
The Omaka Aviation Heritage Center displays in incredible collection of World War I and World War II aircraft and memorabilia owned by film director Sir Peter Jackson. Many of the aircraft are displayed in a manner that makes them appear to be flying - and fighting. For those interested in aircraft history, this is an excellent opportunity to view the evolution of aircraft by many of the WW I and WW II combatants.
This evening meet for an included dinner at the hotel.
After breakfast depart for Havelock where we join the Pelorus Sounds MailBoat a 15-metre catamaran which was custom built locally in 2017 by the previous owners of the Pelorus Mail Boat. The previous boat had also been built by its owners at the time and had been in use for 30 years before its replacement. On board the trip includes commentary on the history of the Sounds and its residents plus complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits all day. There are two decks; open sundeck with seats, a closed lower deck with seating. Friday is The Outer Sounds Route which includes Inner Pelorus Sound, Pohuenui Island, Whakatahuri, Forsyth Island, Port Ligar, Bulwer, Homewood, Waitata Bay, Hopewell Lodge and Jacobs Bay. On disembarkation we coach to Nelson.
After a full day, this morning provides time to leisurely take in Nelson’s renowned Saturday craft market. Rest of the day free to relax and enjoy the city. Evening free.
Today enjoy a sightseeing tour around Nelson before heading to Mapua to browse and perhaps coffee. Continue along the coastal road to Motueka.
The return flight is late afternoon, so time for some retail therapy before transferring to the airport.
