A celebration of all things wild from the West Coast, the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival has something for everyone. Festival goers can enjoy the usual wild treats with some exciting gourmet options.
For the foodies, there is marinated tuna, whitebait patties, gourmet sausages, smoked high country salmon and an assortment of game meat. Some of the newer additions include chicken’s feet, clams and hangi.
Mid-morning flight to Christchurch. On arrival we are transferred to our Christchurch hotel. The afternoon is yours to explore the city.
Today Climb aboard one of the world’s most famous train journeys, between Christchurch and Greymouth. Cross the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, and enjoy thrilling vistas over deep gorges as you travel alongside the ice-fed Waimakariri River. On arrival in Greymouth we have a short walk to our hotel, with time to relax this afternoon before our Welcome Dinner tonight.
Today we head to the Wildfoods Festival for a full day of exploring and tasting new and exciting foods. Late afternoon we are transferred back to our hotel.
Today we travel back on the Tranz Alpine to Christchurch.

Local woman, Claire Bryant, instigated the very first celebration of local wild food. Her wine cellar was very well stocked with a home brew of West Coast gorse flower wine and people were clamouring for a taste of her rose petal brew. So why not a festival celebrating the tastes of the wild West Coast? With the event coinciding with the 125th anniversary of the birth of Hokitika, in March 1990, the Festival was born. A celebration of all things wild from the West Coast, the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival has something for everyone. The iconic Festival huhu grubs are on the menu along with mountain oysters, crocodile bites, grasshoppers and snails. The Festival is all about exposing your palate to something new.
