Ohakune – the Carrot Capital of New Zealand and Turoa Ski Field, and Waiouru – National Army Museum – are these places you have not visited for years?
This three day escape travels by train to Ohakune and explores this varied part of New Zealand. This trip has limited spaces so don’t miss out!
Depart Auckland on the Northern Explorer train with stops on route at Papakura, Pukekohe (subject to minimum numbers) and Hamilton. Morning tea and lunch will be served onboard the train as we make our way through the Waikato region before arriving into Ohakune early afternoon. We then make the short walk to our accommodation for the next two nights. Settle into your timber lodge before meeting for dinner.
After a leisurely breakfast travel by coach. See the contrasting landscape of the Tongariro National Park and the Desert Road. This volcanic plateau of rippling brown tussock and sometimes stony wasteland is appealing and surprising in its harsh beauty. On arrival at the Waiorou National Army Museum an orientation talk by one of the team will start your visit. There will be plenty of time to explore and the café is available for lunch.
The National Army Museum is the museum of the New Zealand Army. The 1300 square metre museum is fortress-looking in design, complete with a bridge and moat. It took the 2nd Field Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Engineers (RNZE) 276 days to build, and was opened in October 1978. It functions as a memorial to those who have fallen, to those who have served and are still serving, and to the battles fought by New Zealand soldiers. On return to Ohakune see the village before travelling the 13km road to the top of the mountain car park. After time to admire the views return to the hotel. Dinner at the hotel tonight.
A morning to relax or take a walk before our mid-day departure on the Northern Explorer train for our journey home.
