The Continent of South Africa

This is a rare opportunity to offer an itinerary that combines land and sea. A cruise that sails past the famed Cape of Good Hope.

Adding in game parks, Cape Town and Namibia’s sand dune rugged coastline.

Kruger is South Africa’s best known game park, an area 200kms long and 40kms wide where the animals roam free just as they have for centuries. We are the ones locked in.

Travelling south with one night in the Kingdom of Swaziland (now known as eSwatini), reveals a different view on African life before boarding the luxurious cruise ship ‘Le Lyrial’ in Durban.

As well as the historic sailing around the Cape, the two days in Cape Town provide ample time to explore this cosmopolitan city with a weather-permitting visit to Table Mountain.

Continue sailing along Namibia’s well-named Skeleton Coast to the former Diamond port of Luderitz and Walvis Bay where seals, pelicans, flamingos and dolphins roam free. Namibia’s orange-coloured sand dunes of Sossusvlei will amaze.

Finish off with our add on an optional tour to Victoria Falls where the mighty Zambezi River thunders on its 108m cascade and Hwange National Park that boosts the largest elephant population in Africa and you will begin to understand this southern part of Africa.

We have half a day to wander and absorb this very isolated town located on the southern Namibian coastline.

Luderitz is a quirky town located on one of the best harbours on the least hospitable coastline in Africa. Founded in 1863, it began life as a trading post, fishing and guano phosphate harvesting port. When diamonds were discovered in 1909 in nearby Kolmanskop, Luderitz suddenly enjoyed a surge of prosperity.
However stocks depleted and with diamonds mainly found elsewhere, the area has reverted to its original self. Its appeal as a town is the fact that little has changed since the early 20th century as well as its German Colonial buildings, diamond mining past and local history.

Welwitschia is a botanical curiosity and is restricted to the Namib Desert. The Welwitschia has the characteristics of both flowering and cone-baring plants and is classified as Gymnosperm, an ancient plant order that includes cycads and conifers.

Saturday 01 May

Sossusvlei

Breakfast iconBreakfast Dinner iconDinner

Before sunrise leave the lodge to enter the park with the rising sun behind us. Part of the day will be in small 4x4 vehicles. The day will provide wonderful photo opportunities at Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei. Later return to the lodge with the remainder of the day free.

Many visitors to Namibia say that no part of the desert is visually more stunning than Sossusvlei with its monumentally high sand dunes. One of the largest of these star-shaped mountains of sand measured from the base is said to be 325m high.

The warm tints of the sand ranging from pale apricot to brick orange and deep red, make them a sort after subject for artists and photographers.

One of the most attractive sites surrounding Sossusvlei is Dead Vlei, a combination of seemingly never-ending blue skies, deep red dunes dotted with skeletons of ancient camel thorn trees, carbon dated between 500 and 600 years old. The dunes are shaped by strong multi-directional winds, primarily the southwester and have three to five sinuous crests which meet at the highest point to give them a star shape.
