The Great Forgotten Taranaki Rail Tour

TARANAKI IS BECOMING ONE OF OUR POPULAR NEW ZEALAND RAIL TOUR DESTINATIONS AND THIS THIRD VENTURE TO THE REGION GIVES YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY THIS RAIL / COACH EXPERIENCE.
Travel along the ‘Forgotten Highway’ from Taumarunui via the Republic of Whangamomona to New Plymouth where New Zealand’s own Mt Fuji – Mt Taranaki or Mt Egmont sits out to the west. – a special journey through an iconic area. Spend time in New Plymouth and travel round the mountain, before the train journey along the ‘milk route’ from New Plymouth to Whanganui and on to National Park with time to relax at the iconic Chateau for a night before returning to Auckland.

Thursday 01 February

Auckland- Taumarunui- New Plymouth

Begin in Auckland or from other regular stations on the main truck line on the ‘Northern Explorer.’ Lunch and morning tea on the train.

From Taumarunui, the coach journey to New Plymouth includes 150km’s of Forgotten Highway through the Tangarakau Gorge Scenic Reserve and stopping at the Republic of Whangamomona for afternoon tea at the restored hotel.

Continue to New Plymouth for a three night stay. A welcome dinner at the hotel tonight.

Friday 02 February

New Plymouth

A full day coach tour of the Taranaki Region includes

  • A visit to a well-known craft/art shop, featuring NZ pottery, felter, glass, jewellery and sculptures.
  • Morning tea and a visit to Ngamamaku – the well-established Taranaki garden.
  • The possum factory.
  • Lunch at the Mountain House.
  • Hollard’s Garden – an oasis in dairy country.
  • Pioneer Village – return to the hotel for dinner.

Saturday 03 February

New Plymouth

Sunday 04 February

New Plymouth - Whanganui

Depart by our vintage train for the renowned Tawhiti Museum in Hawera - a NZ must do! There are themed galleries of shipping, farming, railways and more.

Continue to Whanganui for an afternoon city tour, the river and the Durie Elevator and Tower. Dinner at the hotel.

Monday 05 February

Whanganui- National Park

After breakfast, board our vintage train for your journey north via Marton, through Rangitikei to the Central Plateau.
On arrival at National Park Station transfer to the Chateau Tongariro. A Farewell Dinner at the hotel.

Tuesday 06 February

National Park- Auckland

After breakfast, an optional trip up the Mountain for spectacular views or a coffee at the café. Return to the hotel and coach to the National Park Station for the train home - arriving in Auckland early evening

Booking Conditions

  • A non-refundable deposit of $500 per person will secure a place on the tour. 
  • Full Payment is due no later than 15 December 2017. 
  • Bookings made after 15 December 2017 must be paid in full at time of booking.

Cancellations

  • Deposit – non-refundable
  • All cancellation charges are on a per-person basis.                                                                                                                                                  
  • After 25 August 2017 – no refund                        
  • No Refund can be made once tour is underway.

Travel Insurance

We strongly advise all participants to take out suitable travel insurance to cover cancellation costs. Please feel free to contact us for a quote.

Health and Fitness

At times, entering and exiting the train can be very demanding for those with limited mobility.
To ensure the tour is enjoyable for the whole group, a good standard of fitness is required with the ability to comfortably walk 400 metres.
Mobility frames and scooters are not practical or permitted
