Nestled within the deep hidden valleys of New Zealand’s hinterland is the ‘Forgotten Highway’ and this is the ultimate way to explore rural New Zealand.
Travel to the ‘Republic of Whangamomona’ along decommissioned
railway lines, through tunnels, over bridges and townships that have faded
into the past.
Depart on the comfortable Northern Explorer with pick-ups enroute. Lunch will be onboard. On arrival at Taumarunui, transfer to our hotel for one night. A relaxing tour to the Local Alpaca Farm is included this afternoon. Return to Taumarunui for a local dinner.
Embark on our petrol-driven rail cart journey along the ‘Forgotten Highway,’ camera at the ready, The next 80 kms is a guided journey through open countryside, native bush and historic tunnels. Your overnight stay in this historic 100 year old Whangamomona Hotel will add to this memorable journey.
Today’s full adventure begins with a spectacular helicopter ride to the ’Bridge to Nowhere’. Then enjoy a guided 90 minute bush walk before an exhilarating jet boat trip on the Whanganui River to Taumarunui, for our last nights stay.
This morning we make our way to the Chateau Tongariro for a relaxing morning, before we return by Northern Explorer to arrive back into Auckland early evening.

To ensure the tour is enjoyable for the whole group, a good standard of fitness is required and mobility frames, wheelchairs, scooters are not practical or permitted.
For practical purposes, baggage on this tour is restricted to a small cabin-size suitcase and / or backpack.
