Northland, where spring will be well on its way in late September. This five day jaunt visits premier gardens of the area where all have a special twist to hold your interest. Today with convenient pick-ups enroute travel is north to Coatesville for our first garden visit at Mincher Gardens. The chestnut lined driveway leads to the Georgian styled home with formal plantings of perennial borders before gradually loosening to a cottage style area surrounding old apple trees. Morning tea/coffee will be served on arrival. Lunch is at nearby Coatsville before visiting the garden Twin Lakes. Covering 3 hectares there are 2 distinct parts to the garden.A large impressive formal rose garden constructed in 2017 occupies the northern section of the estate. Around 2 man-made lakes you will find great walks with numerous plantings. The day ends in Snells Beach for an overnight stay. Dinner is at the hotel tonight. Optional evening tour to see Kiwi
We continue north to Maungatapere for a visit to Rockhopper Garden. After tea/ coffee see this garden that has been created on a very rocky section with volcanic soil. Gordon and Rosie Speedy have built the garden based on spring fed ponds and a running creek. See the swampy areas plus a large collection of bromeliads, palms, agaves, aloe and cactus. Old farm machinery and garden art are featured around the garden. A drive into Whangarei for lunch . Travel then continues onto the nearby coastal gem of Tutukaka, Visit Harbourbank garden. This garden was changed forever after a massive rainstorm and slip. The motto is now”grow what will grow”. The lower garden features established trees with cannas and daylilies. The upper garden has a more sub tropical focus. Continue onto Tutukaka for a two night stay. Dinner is included tonight.
