Lord Howe Island Tour Report
Our inaugural tour to Lord Howe Island more than met everyone?s expectations.
We had a very diverse group - five were very keen walkers and were off early some days to ride their bikes to the start of a track and sometimes took their lunch as they combined walking and riding.
Others snorkelled among some of the best coral gardens on the planet ? and Jim and Eve have seen a bit. One area just off Ned?s Beach is a 5 min bike ride from our hotel.
Others enjoyed the easy-paced rambles with Ren as he told us of the unique geology, floral and the bird life of the island,.
More than half the group hired bikes and as the speed limit for cars is 25kph, it is very safe.
We saw sunsets and watched Mutton birds return to their burrows in the evening,; enjoyed coffee at the nearby restaurant and café and socialised at the group BBQ?s catered by Eve and cooked by Jim! Fresh Kingfish ? caught by four of the group highlighted our last BBQ.
There are talks available at the Museum each evening on various topics - flora, birdlife and geology.
The museum also highlights the flying boat era and the epic 1931 flight of Francis Chichester.
Comments heard were there is no graffiti, all the locals wave and say good day, no one locks their doors, the birds seem tame and sing all day and the speed limit is 25kph.
The accommodation was very comfortable, spotlessly clean, self contained and well positioned ? easy walk to two beaches and in the CBD ? a Post Office, four Shops and a restaurant!!
All in all a great week ? we all wished we could stay another day.
