Niue - Polynesia as it was

From 25/08/2012 to 1/09/2012. (Places Available)

Our first tour in 2011 was very well received with reports of an enjoyable and interesting week.
Niue, the world's largest uplifted coral atoll and the world's smallest independent nation, is an uncrowded, untouristy slice of Polynesia as it used to be.
Niue offers a relaxed, nature-based holiday.
It is an unexpected land with genuinely friendly people, a rugged shoreline, is heavily forested throughout the central region and surrounded by an ocean that is quite spectacular with clear, clear waters and an abundance of marine life.
This Pacific nation is fighting back. In today’s world it has little to sustain its people and the population has declined to 1500. The hope is that tourism will provide a turning point and stem the population decline.

Features

walk through virgin rainforests :  whale watch : join the dolphins : swim in pristine waters : cycle in safety :
explore caves and limestone chasms
Why not join us on this little-visited island

Itinerary

August
Saturday 25 / Friday 24   D
Depart from Auckland on a mid morning Air New Zealand flight. Cross the international dateline.
On arrival we have a brief orientation tour before arriving at our hotel. Dinner this evening is fish and chips.

Saturday 25   B D
After breakfast a morning tour visiting some of the spectacular coastal areas. Return to the hotel.  Afternoon free for optional activities such as golf, snorkelling, fishing, a glass bottom boat tour, a swim with the dolphins (must be a competent swimmer) or laze at one of the hotel pools and maybe watch whales close by. The ocean water is crystal clear and deep. Dinner and local entertainment included this evening.

Sunday 26   B L
A leisurely mid morning visit to a local church to hear the singing followed by a traditional Island Sunday lunch. Rest of the afternoon free. A shuttle will be available for those wishing to have an experience of a casual meal at the unique Washaway Café. The café opens Sundays only and many locals spend the afternoon there.

Monday 27   B L
Today we plan a visit to a local school and learn of education and life on the island. Following this there will be time to visit the shops of Alofi. This afternoon board our charter boat for a cruise to see the island from the sea which could include following dolphins or whales which abound in these waters at this time of the year.

Tuesday 28   B
This morning a guided coach tour across the bush clad Island and onto the village of Lakepa to experience more of the island's culture including an 'umu' lunch.
The afternoon return will include a visit to Vaipapahi to see how vanilla is grown.

Wednesday 29   B L
We begin another interesting day with a visit to a local artisan who builds Vakas (local canoes), followed by a tour of Niue’s biggest agricultural activity, a Noni farm. (Noni juice is a health drink reputed to be a natural remedy for many ailments and is known to boost the immune system). The visit includes a tasting.
A private lunch at Washaway café is included before travelling onto the Canoe Landing at the village of Hakupu. The Canoe Landing is a great coastal photo stop and another opportunity of whale sightings.

Thursday 30   B D
Free day for own activities. An evening farewell dinner is at the hotel.

Friday 31   B
For those who wish, an early morning visit to the weekly Market Day (best between 6 & 8am). Return to the hotel for breakfast. Late morning coach to Alofi for last shop visit and lunch, before checking in for the return flight. Cross International Dateline
